i’ve been talking about them a lot this year, but to me, the holiday season is all about traditions. the nostalgia of the season is one of my favorite parts of the holidays.
to be quite honest with you, the past month hasn’t been the easiest on my end. i can’t lie…2018 has treated me so well, but in a rollercoaster-y way, filled of the sort of high highs & low lows you have when you’re making a big life change or starting your own business. that’s not to say i’m not insanely grateful for what’s happened in the last year, or that i’d have it any other way at this point. but after 11 months, the hustle bustle of the year is finally catching up to me a little bit: i feel tired.
i’m sure i’m not the only one, either. that’s why they call it the holiday blues, right? the weight of the year catches up to you in the height of what’s supposed to be the happiest season of all. it’s weird.
anyway, i really think that’s why i love holiday traditions so much. you can take shelter in the comforting familiarity of the one thing you do every year with your loved ones.
for me, it’s struggling to put up a giant christmas tree in our tiny dining room because chris & i are suckers for creating our own nostalgic traditions. it’s delivering holiday cookie plates while wearing goofy santa hats on a cold sunday afternoon. it’s agreeing to stay in on a friday night with a couple of cozy homemade cocktails to binge some netflix & wrap presents together.
so that’s exactly what we’re talking about today: my new favorite cozy christmas gift wrapping cocktail: a smoky spiked coconut chai tea latte.

if i told you this smoky spiked coconut chai tea latte is inspired by a cocktail i had in an airport, would you be shocked?! pahahahaha. because it totally is, & if i’m being totally honest, i’m still shocked about it too.
when we flew to hawaii earlier this fall, chris & i had a 2 or 3 hour layover in sea-tac. for whatever reason, chris is a total sucker for an airport bloody mary, so we stopped in at a little cafe near our terminal for brunch before our flight to maui. turns out the little airport cafe is a sister restaurant to one of the trendiest restaurants in seattle.
their cocktail list was insane.
& as soon as i sipped their spiked chai tea latte, i was dreaming of recreating it once i got home.
so that’s exactly what we have here: a coconut chai tea latte, lightly sweetened with a little pure maple syrup, & spiked with tequila & smoky mezcal. 
& not to be dramatic, but this smoky spiked coconut chai tea latte is ev.er.y.thingggggg.guh.
there’s so much going on! first of all, all of the flavor of the chai tea comes through & infuses itself into the creaminess of the coconut milk.

then! then comes the fun stuff: a shot of your favorite tequila, & a splash of smoky mezcal.
if you’ve been around for awhile, you know how i’m obsessed i am with mezcal. it has everything you love about a nice tequila, plus tons of smoky flavor, & i love using it to kick my margaritas up another notch. & when you add the smokiness of mezcal to a spicy & sweet chai tea latte?
whoa. whoa whoa whoa.
suddenly the humble chai tea latte turns into something that’s everything you could ever want out of a cozy winter drink.
it’s really kind of magical.

what i really love about smoky spiked coconut chai tea latte recipe is how easy it is to whip up. it calls for only pantry & bar staples. no need to run to the store, no need to make a crazy syrups or track down crazy liqueurs.

- make chai tea: heat up the coconut milk in a saucepan & let chai tea bags steep right into the coconut milk.
- spike it! once steeped, stir in the maple, tequila, & mezcal.
that’s it! it’s truly a 5 ingredient, 15 minute operation, & the result is so, so good.

Description
smoky spiked coconut chai tea latte. an easy spiked chai tea recipe! a coconut chai tea latte, lightly sweetened with maple syrup & spiked with mezcal & tequila. an easy & cozy boozy chai tea that’s perfect to warm up on a cold winter night.
Ingredients
- 1 14-ounce can full-fat coconut milk
- ½ cup water
- 6 chai tea bags
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- 2 ounces tequila
- 1 ounce mezcal
- pinch Kosher salt
Instructions
Add the coconut milk, water and chai tea bags to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a simmer and steep the tea for 8-10 minutes, according to package directions, stirring occasionally to prevent the mixture from boiling over. Once steeped, remove and discard the spent tea bags. Stir in the maple syrup, tequila, mezcal, and a pinch of Kosher salt. Stir to combine. Divide between two mugs and serve immediately. Cheers!
