guys! GUYS!!!!!!

we are doing it big today. this frosé recipe is probably my favorite recipe i’ve created in 2019, to date. i’m not even kidding. i am uhhhhbsessed.

& can you blame me?: classic paloma cocktail + classic frosé-style wine slushy = summer 2019 drink of choice, FOR SURE.

frosé palomas: the easiest frozen paloma cocktails!frose palomas in glass with grapefruit garnish

frosé palomas! it’s like taking all of the bright & fresh flavors out of a paloma cocktail & putting them into the perfectly refreshing wine slushy. actual question: could summer sipping get better than that?!

a few reasons why i’m so freakin’ obsessed with them & i know you will be too…

  • you only need 6 simple ingredients 10 minutes active prep to throw them together
  • they pack a big fat boozy punch, but still taste super light & refreshing
  • each batch serves 4-6, so they’re absolutely perfect for summer girls nights or backyard parties
  • & i mean…tequila + rosé, what more could you want??

tons of freshly squeezed grapefruit & lime juice (in addition to a can of your favorite sparkling grapefruit water & some tequila, of course) add the light & fresh flavor profile of a classic paloma cocktail to this frosé, in the most refreshing way possible. the citrus is tart, the tequila adds the perfect bite, & the frozen rosé wine keeps everything super light & sippable. frose palomas in glass with grapefruit garnish

plus! unlike lots of frozen wine or tequila cocktails, these frosé palomas have the perfect level of sweetness (there is nothing worse than drinking a sugar-bomb on a hot summer day, right??). they are juuust sweet enough, the only added sweetener being a few tablespoons of agave nectar to balance out the bite of the tequila.

speaking of the tequila: these cuties do fall on the boozier end of the spectrum since they’re made with both tequila & rosé wine. but honestly, that’s always sort of the goal whenever you’re mixing up a batch of cocktails for a summery girls night or a weekend at the lake, right? the booziness is totally balanced out by the tart citrus & the refreshing factor that comes from the frozen rosé. summer sipping at its finest!

ingredients in paloma frozen rosé: pouring wine in baking dish to freeze

you only need 6 simple ingredients to make 1 seriously incredible rosé cocktail, & it’s one of the main reasons i’m absolutely obsessed with these frosé palomas.

lots of frosé recipes have extra steps like making a homemade simple syrup, infusing booze with berries, etc, etc, etc. we can skip all that fuss because this frozen rosé gets its flavor from some fresh ingredients you’d typically find in a classic paloma cocktail, without any extra fuss & no cooking necessary.

here’s what you need!

  • rosé wine (more on that below!)
  • grapefruit sparkling water (pamplemousse for the win!)
  • tequila
  • grapefruit
  • lime
  • agave nectar

best wine for frosé recipe:

unlike lots of frosé recipes out there that use berries & watermelon, this frosé recipe is full of grapefruit & citrus. as such, you’ll want to find a rosé wine that lends itself more towards citrusy notes than berry notes.

pinot noir rosés (french, deeply pink or red in color) tend to be very berry-forward – i suggest staying away from them! instead, look for a rosé that’s paler in color & has citrusy or stone fruit notes – generally speaking, italian & south american rosés will be better suited for frosé palomas. also! there’s obviously no need to splurge for a really nice bottle here – we’re freezing it & mixing it with tequila, so you can go for something that’s cheap & cheerful, but drinkable for sure.

when in doubt, ask the folks at your favorite liquor store or wine shop to point you in the right direction – that’s what they’re there for!

how to make frosé recipe:frozen rose wine in blender with frose paloma ingredients

reason #1 to love these easy frozen rosé wine drinks? they are SO flippin’ easy to throw together.

you only need 6 simple ingredients, & about 10 minutes of active prep time…but you do need to plan slightly in advance since we’re working with frozen rosé wine here.

or, i mean, you could just make sure your freezer is continuously stocked with frozen rosé. which, now that i think about it…isn’t all that terrible of an idea, right?! #summermood

ANYWHO. here’s how it goes down.

you’ll take some rosé wine & freeze it in a glass baking dish or resealable freezer bag. this step takes time, but not a lot of effort – you literally just need to pour the rosé into your baking dish (+ a can of grapefruit sparkling water for extra paloma vibes! ?), & pop it on into the freezer. i suggest using a baking dish that has a lid so you can seal it on up & avoid spills on the way to or in your freezer. major note: please, please, please do NOT freeze your wine in the bottle. not only will you not be able to get it out of the bottle, it might explode since the water content of the wine will expand as it freezes. no bueno!

& really, that’s it! it takes about 24 hours for the rosé to freeze (no, not 6, not 12 – 24 full hours). making sure the rosé wine is frozen solid is crucial, since it’s how the frosé gets its perfectly slushy texture. from there, all you have to do is blend the frozen rosé with some classic paloma cocktail ingredients (more on those in a sec!) – i told you this was simple!

then we blend everything together into the happiest batch of tequila wine slushies there ever was. i told you this was simple! blended frose palomas in blender

what happens when wine freezes?

when wine freezes, it doesn’t actually freeze totally solid like water does. the wine’s water content freezes, but its alcohol doesn’t, so it turns it to a slushy consistency. the alcohol is also why it takes longer to freeze than water would. (& why you need to plan on freezing your rosé for a full 24 hours!).  frose palomas in glass with grapefruit garnish

Description

Frosé palomas, people!!! A summery twist on a classic paloma cocktail, this paloma frosé recipe frosé is filled with fresh grapefruit, lime, agave nectar, tequila, & frozen rosé wine. so EASY to make & so REFRESHING! Learn how to make frose (aka frozen rose) – just 6 simple ingredients + 10 minutes active time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 750 mL bottle rosé wine (see Recipe Notes)
  • 1 12 oz can grapefruit sparkling water (such as LaCroix)
  • 4 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 grapefruit, juiced
  • 1 large lime, juiced
  • 34 tablespoons agave nectar

Instructions

  1. Freeze the rosé. 24 hours before you want to make your frosé, freeze the rosé! This is absolutely critical for getting your frosé to be the perfectly slushy texture, so plan ahead & know that it only takes 2 minutes to prep the rosé for the freezer. Pour the rosé wine and the grapefruit sparkling water into a large baking dish. I like to use a large Pyrex baking dish since it has a lid you can use to seal it up. Place in the freezer. Freeze for 24 hours, or until the rosé wine is frozen solid. Note that it will be soft (you can break it up into big frozen pieces with a fork), but if you tilt the baking dish liquid should not run from one side to the other.
  2. Blend the paloma frosé: Add the tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice & agave to a high-speed blender. Transfer the frozen rosé + sparkling water into the blender. Cover and blend until combined.
  3. Serve immediately, garnished with grapefruit zest or wedges as desired. Cheers!
