 oh hi! hey! hello!

i’m feeling a little enthusiastic today because:

a) cinco de mayo is on saturday, which is pretty much my favorite day of the year, after christmas. helllllooooo taco fest.

b) it’s freakin’ margarita week(!!!!!).

& c) it’s been a minute since i last posted a cocktail recipe.

i was shocked when i looked back to see the last time i posted a cocktail recipe was in october. i honestly don’t know why i haven’t posted one in so long! but that’s neither here nor there at this point. given that it’s margarita week & cinco de mayo is on saturday, it was the perfect time to come out of cocktail hibernation & share a cocktail recipe.

speaking of cinco de mayo, what are you doing to celebrate?! tell me everything! i need to live vicariously through you & your plans.  perfectly smoky & sweet, these smoky mango mezcal margaritas are the best way to give your margarita game a little flair! the deep smokiness of mezcal is the perfect pair for sweet mango juice. this smoky mango mezcal margarita recipe is easy to make, & even easier to drink...the only thing missing is chips & guac!

cinco de mayo is one of my favorite holidays of spring/summer, but i’m (sadly) not sure we’ll be doing anything especially festive to celebrate cinco de mayo this weekend. chris & i are traveling in the uk this week (terrible trade-off, right?). we spent the weekend visiting chris’ older brother & our sister-in-law in bristol, which is about 2 hours from london. they moved to bristol last fall. &, omg, what a seriously beautiful city! we spent our days walking a lot, seeing some of their favorite places, & definitely enjoying some of the local specialties (artisanal gin + tonics!, pints of beer!, fish + chips!, the best indian food!(!!!), etc.). safe to say the trip has thus far surpassed expectations. we are really loving our time here.

since we’re flying back to minnesota all day on friday, & jet lag is really real, a huge fiesta of tacos + guac realistically isn’t going to happen this weekend.

but what could totally happen?

yes please.

these smoky mango mezcal margaritas are so easy to throw together, & so, so, so full of flavor!

as you may recall, i’m totally a tequila gal, but mezcal is really my obsession. it has everything you love about a nice tequila, plus tons of smoky flavor. you can find it in most liquor stores right next to the tequila assortment. when it comes to shopping for mezcal, or any booze for that matter, i always defer to asking the pros at my neighborhood liquor store for their suggestion. similar to tequila or whiskey, mezcal can vary in quality from the kind that’s great for mixing up cocktails to the kind that are best for sipping (& prices increase accordingly, if you know what i mean…). the folks at your store should be able to help point you in the right direction!

because of its smokiness, i always love to pair mezcal with naturally sweet flavors, like pineapple, or in this case – mango! the combination of sweet + smoky is totally & completely to die for – the kind of thing that has you going back in for another sip after sip after sip. perfectly smoky & sweet, these smoky mango mezcal margaritas are the best way to give your margarita game a little flair! the deep smokiness of mezcal is the perfect pair for sweet mango juice. this smoky mango mezcal margarita recipe is easy to make, & even easier to drink...the only thing missing is chips & guac!

plus, i mean…that color!

the beauty of these smoky mango mezcal margaritas is how easy they are to make. perfectly smoky & sweet, these smoky mango mezcal margaritas are the best way to give your margarita game a little flair! the deep smokiness of mezcal is the perfect pair for sweet mango juice. this smoky mango mezcal margarita recipe is easy to make, & even easier to drink...the only thing missing is chips & guac!

seriously! we’re talking…5 minutes kind of easy here.

you throw some mezcal, mango juice, freshly squeezed lime & triple sec into a cocktail shaker, shake away, & your smoky mango mezcal margarita is ready to be enjoyed. that’s it!

one margarita tip i’ll give ya, though, is this: do yourself a favor & buy a citrus juicer. this is the one i use & i’m totally obsessed with it. not only does it make juicing all those limes a breeze, you also are able to get a ton more juice out of the fruit. no waste!

another margarita tip? extra salt please. i used some hawaiian salt for these margs because a) i had some extra on hand, b) it’s pretty, & c) i miss hawaii, but it’s totally not necessary. when it comes to margaritas, i do typically prefer to use kosher salt – the flakes are the perfect size to adhere to the glass nicely, without making a huge mess. give it a try!

Ingredients

Scale
  • for rimming glasses: Kosher salt & extra lime wedges
  • 1 1/2 ounces mezcal
  • 2 ounces triple sec
  • 3 ounces mango juice (see Recipe Notes)
  • 2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice (about 2 juicy limes)
  • optional: 1 ounce club soda (flavored as desired!)

Instructions

  1. Rim a frosty glass: Place a generous amount of Kosher salt on a small plate. Run a wedge of lime around the rim of a frosty glass. Dip the edges into the Kosher salt to rim the surface in the salt. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
  2. Mix the margarita: Add the mezcal, triple sec, mango juice, and lime juice to a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake for about 30 seconds to combine. Strain into your prepared glass. Finish, as desired, with a splash of club soda (flavored as desired!). Cheers!

Notes

  • Mango juice! I found a great mango juice in cans at Trader Joe’s. I’ve also made this recipe with a mixed passion fruit + mango juice (again, Trader Joe’s) & it was obviously delicious. Use whatever you can find & like best!
  • Serving a crowd? Instead of mixing up smoky mango mezcal margaritas one by one, go ahead and multiply the recipe by 4 or 6 (depending on the size of your crowd), pouring all of the ingredients into your favorite pitcher. Just as your guests arrive, add some ice to the pitcher. Set out glasses, salt, and limes so your guests can serve themselves, leaving you to enjoy hostessing & not play bartender all night long. #boom.
  • An electric citrus juicer like this one is a lifesaver if you make any amounts of margaritas on the reg. Seriously.
  • These smoky mango mezcal margaritas are destined to be served with a big bowl of guacamole. Obvi.
