guys.  tomorrow, it is SEPTEMBER!!!

september is my all-time favorite month of the year.

& in the name of transparency, i’ll admit – i have a theory: when it comes to favorite months of the year, people tend to love their birth month.  & not only is my birthday in september but my wedding anniversary is too.  #doublewin

but while i do have this birthday bias for september, i also wholeheartedly & steadfastly believe it is the BEST month of the year.  allow me to convince you:

let’s start with weather considerations. september is perfection on the weather front.  the hot & humid dog days of summer through august give way to cool & crisp mornings that lead to sunny & pleasantly warm september afternoons.

along the same lines, sweatshirt season officially begins in september.  it’s just comfortable enough to be perfectly content wearing jeans & a sweatshirt.

flavors of fall harvest begin to make their way into menus & your pinterest feed.  apples, pies, salty caramel, pumpkin spice, & chai lattes…what more could you want?

did i mention that beyoncé’s birthday is also in september?

& finally (as if beyoncé’s birthday wasn’t enough to sway you) this last reason just might do the trick: football season.  rooting your favorite team after a 6+ month hiatus while drinking a couple of beers, & snacking on treats?  what more could you want?

& with that, i rest my case.  september is the ultimate best month of the year, hands down.

i’ve got a couple of awesome gameday recipes in store this football season, but wanted to kick things off with my easiest game day recipe:

grilled fries tossed in an abundance of fresh herbs & served with homemade lemon pesto aioli.  grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com

this combination is the best way to kick off football season whether you’re tailgating at the stadium or throwing a gameday party at home.

these grilled fries get a great crispy exterior with a tender interior & are paired with a super flavorful lemon pesto aioli.  & psst, they’re super easy too.  like, super easy.  like so easy that i guarantee you have everything you need to make these bad boys already in your pantry & they’ll be ready in less than 15 minutes…

so, what are ya waiting for??

start by slicing 3-5 potatoes into wedges.  i use yukon gold potatoes because love their creamy consistency, but any ol’ tater would do.  toss them in a drizzle of olive oil with salt, pepper, & tons of fresh herbs.  i always opt for my favorite classic combination of rosemary, thyme, & chives.grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com
toss ’em on a flaming hot grill for 5 minutes on each side.  after 10 minutes total, they’ll be crispy golden perfection on the outside & tender in the inside.  toss 1 more time with some fresh herbs & you’ll be in grilled fries heaven.  grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com

while the potatoes are grilling, you can also quickly throw together a homemade aioli (& impress all yo fraaanns) with just a wide-mouth mason jar, an immersion blender & some basic pantry ingredients: an egg, a cup of oil, some grated fresh garlic, an ample dose of lemon juice & zest, & some pesto.  (hint: this is an awesome way to use up some kale pesto!)grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com

serve up your lemon pesto aioli in a bowl alongside a platter of your grilled fries & get ready for some football!grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com grilled fries with fresh herbs & lemon pesto aioli via playswellwithbutter.com

the only thing missing is a couple of beers & a packers win!

what’s your favorite part of fall?  or, even better, what’s your favorite football food? do you cheer for college or pro ball? or are you the type to be perfectly fine casually watching a game between snacking on great treats & napping on your comfy sofa in your coziest leggings?  let me know in the comments below & let’s chat!

though you can totally use store-bought pesto, the homemade lemon pesto aioli i made here used my favorite kale pesto.  it’s super easy to whip up & is packed with superfood benefits of kale.  check out the recipe here.kale pesto via playswellwithbutter | easy, delicious & versatile, kale pesto will become a fridge staple in your house!& because fries are meant to be eaten with burgers, make it a complete meal with my caprese turkey burgers.  find the recipe here!caprese turkey burgers with pesto, fresh mozzarella & heirloom tomato via playswellwithbutter
